Rainy Weekend in Seoul
I stayed in my apartment all day this weekend and am starting to get cabin fever. I guess it is a perfect day to go to an indoor mall and shop for bathing suits as I dream of my beach vacation.

NB Review
The people are ugly but the music is good (all American hiphop). Recommended if you want to dance but not for creeping.
I know I've been Koreanized because I got more excited when they played one DJ DOC song the entire night rather than when Luda came on.

Peter is coming in 22 days!
This song is pretty. Nice Korean love song to go with this post.
My boyfriend
Brian and I finally got asked today in public if we were dating. You may remember Brian from my previous blog posts, he is my coworker aka bestie aka only friend I like hanging out with in Seoul. Next time I get asked I am just going to go with it.
The hubby and me at Between in Itaewon. Between is fun and they have a very good looking crowd. I ordered a Grey Goose and tonic and the waitress thought Grey Goose was gin. Bless her heart!

I don't hate salads
Living in the states, I took salads for granted. I rarely order salads as a main and I always thought I was blah about them. Living in Seoul, I realized I don't hate salads, I actually like them. Due to the lack of fresh vegetables in Korean cuisine, I have started to crave salads on the regular. Your body knows what is good and after a while calls out for the fresh veggies.
Ask any American living here how they take regular shits on a Korean diet and they will tell you "Digestif cookies". True story, take notes if you plan on visiting for an extended amount of time (2 a day works miracles).
Anyways, I digress as per usual. I had an amazing mushroom and cheese salad today. The end.
Silly Menu Item names at Cafe Mou
Um yea, all stylish people in NY loves traditional. Say what? Just tell me if this Caesar has chicken in it. Such a useless caption. Also, did they think traditional meant the same thing as salad? So confused...
To Cafe Mou's defense, the Woman in Love Senegal was bomb. Should this be "Woman in Love with Senegalese Man" or "Senegalese Woman in love with white man"?
Exhibit A Woman in Love Senegal:
Also in their defense, it was one of the prettiest cafes I have been to.
Cafe T
Good ambiance.
Hot dog in a pancake. The pancake was good, the hot dog was good, the mayo and salad in the whole concoction not so much. Dissected and eaten separately it was tasty.
Soba salad. The dressing was spot on. I am going to crave this all the time now. Especially when I get back to NY.
The blueberry french toast was A++ The bread was soo soft and moist with good cinnamon flavor.
Brian makes me laugh.
Pack of Black Menthols with your coffee?
At Tom n Tom's Coffee they were pushing the Marlboro Black Menthols hard at the Apku location. They had them prominently displayed by the register for purchase and also had big advertisements in the smoking section. These cigarettes are instant lung cancer in a box to me, they are reds with a super mint flavor and a hint of cloves. Gag. My coworker says he likes them because he thinks they make his breath smell minty (pretty sure this is a figment of his imagination).
P.S. I love the grapefruit tea at Tom n Tom's although it just tasted like really good grapefruit juice and there was nothing teaish about it.

Work is dunzo
This year has been amazing, by the time it is over I will have worked only 9 months out of the year. Call me lazy, I say life is good.
Major cultural sightseeing will ensue on Wednesday. Also, I will finally get to go to the hip hop club NB. I never went because I hear it gets crazy packed. Cheers to clubbing on Tuesday nights! Have not done that in literally 4 years.

Shinchon not to be confused with Shinchun
I am going to live in Korea..still
I have had friends say to me, "I get so bored in Korea after a month, how are you wanting to stay?" You get bored because you stay with relatives and need to see your extended family half of your stay. Living here is a whole different animal. There are a million bars and clubs to go to (OK fine, Korea's weakness is that there is not a whole lot to do for fun besides drinking but this sits fine with me), amazing restaurants, a thousand places to shop for boutique clothing, cool areas to hang out, a few cultural things. What more do I need? It is like NYC with healthier food, cheaper but well designed clothing, and a skyline that allows me to see the sun and the moon in the sky (gasp!).
The thought of getting a masters in education and moving here to be a professor has crossed my mind. I would be paid amazingly well in a city with a cheap cost of living (besides rent which is on a NYC level). Peter, in an effort to quickly kill this idea in my mind, said I would be leaving NY to be a big fish in a little pond. Offended, because Seoul is not a little pond. Seoul is the 8th most populous city in the world, more people than Tokyo, Beijing, NYC, London, Hong Kong, Berlin, Madrid, Paris. Offended because no one would say London is a little pond. Although if you take size, population density, and some other factors into account we go down the list. Let's just say size of a city is dependant solely on population for arguments sake. Go to the top of Seoul Tower and you would know Seoul is not a little pond at all.
New Yorkers have the tendency to think NY is the best. I admit I am guilty of this as well. We like to think that the world revolves around NY. John Updike has said, "The true New Yorker secretly believes that anyone living anywhere else must somehow, in a sense, be kidding." Speaking like a true New Yorker. While I still cannot say that Seoul is better than NY on a coolness level (because let's be real, there is no city as unique or diverse as NYC) there are, dare I say, other livable cities (shocker), Seoul being one of them.
So due to my surprising compatibility with Seoul, the thought of leaving American forever and becoming a lifer has been an appealing idea as of late. Peter's little pond argument didn't quite work. However, the next morning after this discussion with the boy, I woke up craving a bagel with cream cheese. A real bagel with cream cheese. A toasted sesame bagel with an inch and a half of cream cheese and maybe with a little lox sprinkled in. The day after that I really just wanted a slice of pizza, not a whole pie from Mr Pizza with sweet potato on it (although it is delicious). So while I guess you can take the girl out of NY, you can't take the NY out of the girl. I follow where my stomach takes me and ultimately it needs more variety, it's the spice of life.

청계천 Cheonggyecheon
The stream was named Gaecheon (open stream) after the first refurbishment project to construct a drainage system during the Joseon Dynasty (mad long ago nuts!). The work, which included dredging and bolstering the banks of the stream and building the bridges, was carried out every 2~3 years during this period from the reign of Taejong, the third king of the Joseon Dynasty. The King Yeonjo especially undertook the refurbishment work as a national project.
Gacheon was renamed to Cheonggyecheon, its current name, during the Japanese colonial period. During this time, financial difficulties prevented the colonialists from covering up the stream despite several attempts to do so (the damn Japanese, why they gotta ruin everything for us? we can't even have a stream?).
After the Korean War (1950~1953), more people migrated into Seoul and settled down along the stream in shabby makeshift houses. The accompanying trash, sand, and waste, and deteriorating conditions resulted in an eyesore in the city. The stream was covered up with concrete step by step for 20 years since 1958 (good good way to get rid of an eyesore..cover it with concrete I guess). This area became an example of ‘successful industrialization and modernization’.
In July 2003, then-Seoul mayor, current President Lee Myung-Bak initiated a project to remove the elevated highway and restore the stream. Some people didn't want it, they spent $281 million us dollars making this glorious. Lee Myung-Bak gets the last laugh because now everyone loves it.
It is a very pretty refuge to relax in the craziness that is Seoul. The water is very clean, kids swim and bring inflatables. Couples cuddle under bridges (because I don't know if I mentioned that Koreans are super monogamous and everyone is one half of a couple here, it's annoying more on that another day). Really nice place to hang out.
