Osama Bin Laden Lesson

So my 12 year old didn't know the difference between the Empire State building and the WTC. So we got into it.

Me: But the WTC isn't there anymore because some terrorists flew planes into them and they fell down.
J: Who would do that?
Me: Well, OBL organized it because he leads this group called Al Qaeda which is a terrorist organization
J: Did they catch him yet?
Me: Nope, actually if you help the FBI catch him you get $25 million dollars
J: How much is that?
Me: That's 250 Bentleys (Bentley is her favorite car so I have to explain that way)
J: 250 Bentleys?! I am going to catch him!!!
Me: mmm don't think you will
J: Why not?
Me: I don't think your mom will let you go to Afghanistan or Pakistan to go look for him
J: Maybe he's in Seoul
Me: Uh, pretty sure he's not in Seoul
J: Maybe I'll be in Galleria and he'll be shopping
Me: I don't think you'll see him in Galleria shopping
J: Why not?
Me: Because he doesn't need a Louis Vuitton wallet
J: Why?
Me: He doesn't care about labels and things like that.
J: Oh my god, what's wrong with him?!

I. love. her.

I died so funny

I stole this from my buddy Matt Schmidt. Thanks love!

I literally laughed out loud at some of their comments. It's about the National outfit portion of the Miss Universe pageant.

Gems like"Switzerland apparently got tired of being neutral, you guys. Miss Switzerland will bathe in the blood of her enemies if she doesn't at least make it to runner up. Also, if you don't drink her cocoa."

Just to make it about Korea somewhat, here is what Miss Korea is wearing/wore (? I don't keep up with this crap) to 2010. She did not get the memo that the national costume should be a tranny hot slutty mess. This is so why we did not make the top 10.

It should have been this:

Rainy Weekend in Seoul

It has been monsooning since Friday. I woke up this morning and could not see a single thing outside my window. It is raining cats and dogs as my 12 year old likes to say. She loves idioms :-)

I stayed in my apartment all day this weekend and am starting to get cabin fever. I guess it is a perfect day to go to an indoor mall and shop for bathing suits as I dream of my beach vacation.

Movie Day

I watched two movies today.

A State of Mind, a documentary about 2 girls training for North Korea's Mass Games. Good glimpse into North Korea.

Untold Scandal, Korea's version of Dangerous Liasons. Untold Scandal was visually pleasing and worth a watch.

Both are available on instant watch on Netflix.

Last night was rough

I woke up naked with, not a man next to me in bed but.........a bag of tempura.

And the door may or may not have been open while I was sleeping. My roomate's mother is in town.

Ahahah do you remember this?

I always had it me that I would like Kpop because how obsessed was everyone with Kpop in middle school? My bedroom was covered with pictures of 희준.

This kind of delayed me musically. I vividly remember being in my homie Kristen's car in 10th or 11th grade and "Buffalo Solder" came on. I had to ask her who it was. She looked at me incredulously and was like "Lia YOU DON'T KNOW BOB MARLEY?!" True story, this happened. So at that point I knew I needed to educate myself musically beyond H.O.T. and Ja Rule. I still can remember her face to the T this day. The image has scarred the shame into me for life.

Now, I'm hip you guys I listen to like YACHT and Phoenix, I swear. I'm really hip and with it.

I was reminiscing on all the songs I jammed to in 6th grade.

The jam of all jams. Everyone and their mother was trying to do the Woohyuk dance. I always wondered why they picked such an average white girl in the video. I now realize she was probably teaching English here and they found her randomly on the streets of Itaewon. Just how white people cannot tell what a good looking/pretty Asian is, I don't think Koreans really know in regards to white people either.

The black guy in the beginning is totally from Itaewon also. Jinusean "Gasoline". I love the how 'gangster' this guy is in the video. Koreans are NOT hood. Let's be real, if we ever in jail for a felony, it'd be for like money embezzling from our Fortune 500 company.

Yoo Seung Joon "Na Na Na". OK a few things on this video. Is Yoo Seung Joon the reason why every Flushing guy had that long string of hair in the front? Was he solely responsible for the trend? If you go to the 3:50 mark, she is teaching the class Engrish and on the board it says " lettle" and "modst". Pretty sure that is not English. Why is he playing basketball on a stage in front of his school?

He was such a butterface but he was actually a really good singer and dancer so you have to give him props. I was a fan.

Roora 날개잃은천사 Love love

I was looking for a video of 1Tym and I came across this gem. Them speaking English. People trying to guess WTF they are saying in English. 1:53-2:30 is so funny. I love Korean accents.

NB Review

NB (Noise Basement) is a hip hop club in Gangnam. We went on a Wednesday night because it would be 'less packed', uh still was super packed.

The people are ugly but the music is good (all American hiphop). Recommended if you want to dance but not for creeping.

I know I've been Koreanized because I got more excited when they played one DJ DOC song the entire night rather than when Luda came on.

My 12 Year Old

Sees my ipod. "I had your IPod.........in 2nd grade"

Ugh, little girls are the worst!

Bali

I just booked my trip, super excited for 8 days in Bali!

Need to book Osaka now...

Engrish

Me: What is slander?
Jason: It is a lizard
Me: No, it is not a lizard, where do you get this from
Jason: Teacher, it IS a lizard
Me: Ohhhhh salamander....no it is not a salamander

NB

I am going to a hip-hop club tonight. Worried I won't know any of the songs because I have no idea what is going on musically in the US. Good thing Korea is 4 months behind on everything.

This one is a shout out to Di

My friend Diana is researching Kpop for a project. Here is a list of my other current favorites. My real favorites, Se7en, Miss A, and DJ DOC have already been posted.

Click to view on youtube, because the videos always get cut off here.

Korean hip hop. The video is genius.

That group Shinee you mentioned on my Fb. This is their big hit right now. I love this song with no irony.

From wikipedia: Shinee is considered to be a fashion icon having started the "Shinee Trend". Ugh really?!

Perez Hilton who is weirdly obsessed with Kpop posted a Taeyang video the other day but this one is better. "You're my chocolate my sweetest chocolate. You're my ice cream, my sweetest ice cream" Really who cares about the lyrics when he's shirtless. It switches gears at the 2:20 mark.

The first girl in this video who sings with the short hair is a Cali girl and she's amazing. I saw them live and Nicole can shake her ass like a true American because that's how we do. However, the tall girl with the super long hair is one of the hottest Korean bitches of all time.

Her name is Kang Jihyung, she is living anime. Sooo hot

This is the new Super Junior video. The fat member on the right makes me laugh whenever they show him dancing.

Hope you enjoyed!

Peter is coming in 22 days!

So excited, cannot wait.

This song is pretty. Nice Korean love song to go with this post.

My boyfriend

Brian and I finally got asked today in public if we were dating. You may remember Brian from my previous blog posts, he is my coworker aka bestie aka only friend I like hanging out with in Seoul. Next time I get asked I am just going to go with it.

The hubby and me at Between in Itaewon. Between is fun and they have a very good looking crowd. I ordered a Grey Goose and tonic and the waitress thought Grey Goose was gin. Bless her heart!

I don't hate salads

Living in the states, I took salads for granted. I rarely order salads as a main and I always thought I was blah about them. Living in Seoul, I realized I don't hate salads, I actually like them. Due to the lack of fresh vegetables in Korean cuisine, I have started to crave salads on the regular. Your body knows what is good and after a while calls out for the fresh veggies.

Ask any American living here how they take regular shits on a Korean diet and they will tell you "Digestif cookies". True story, take notes if you plan on visiting for an extended amount of time (2 a day works miracles).

Anyways, I digress as per usual. I had an amazing mushroom and cheese salad today. The end.

Silly Menu Item names at Cafe Mou

Went to Cafe Mou in Apkujeong. They had such ridiculous names and captions on their menu I had to blog about it.

Um yea, all stylish people in NY loves traditional. Say what? Just tell me if this Caesar has chicken in it. Such a useless caption. Also, did they think traditional meant the same thing as salad? So confused...

To Cafe Mou's defense, the Woman in Love Senegal was bomb. Should this be "Woman in Love with Senegalese Man" or "Senegalese Woman in love with white man"?

Exhibit A Woman in Love Senegal:

Also in their defense, it was one of the prettiest cafes I have been to.

Cafe T

Cafe T in 청담. Recommended.

Good ambiance.

Hot dog in a pancake. The pancake was good, the hot dog was good, the mayo and salad in the whole concoction not so much. Dissected and eaten separately it was tasty.

Soba salad. The dressing was spot on. I am going to crave this all the time now. Especially when I get back to NY.

The blueberry french toast was A++ The bread was soo soft and moist with good cinnamon flavor.

Brian makes me laugh.

Pack of Black Menthols with your coffee?

At Tom n Tom's Coffee they were pushing the Marlboro Black Menthols hard at the Apku location. They had them prominently displayed by the register for purchase and also had big advertisements in the smoking section. These cigarettes are instant lung cancer in a box to me, they are reds with a super mint flavor and a hint of cloves. Gag. My coworker says he likes them because he thinks they make his breath smell minty (pretty sure this is a figment of his imagination).

P.S. I love the grapefruit tea at Tom n Tom's although it just tasted like really good grapefruit juice and there was nothing teaish about it.

Cafe in Itaewon

Yet another cafe in Itaewon. The main pasttimes of Koreans are to shop, go to a cafe, or go to a bar.

This cafe had pizza and because I am a fat girl I had to eat a pepperoni pizza with my americano.

Work is dunzo

I have work until Tuesday and then I have a 2 month break until I start a new job (whatever that may be).

This year has been amazing, by the time it is over I will have worked only 9 months out of the year. Call me lazy, I say life is good.

Major cultural sightseeing will ensue on Wednesday. Also, I will finally get to go to the hip hop club NB. I never went because I hear it gets crazy packed. Cheers to clubbing on Tuesday nights! Have not done that in literally 4 years.

Jersey Shore quote

Sammi: That was a test and you failed miserably.
Ronnie: I don't like tests, that's why I didn't go to college.

I may have met God today

I saw a cloud this morning that made me feel like Heaven may actually exist.

My SSAT Class

So the middle schoolers weren't so bad.

From left to right: Jason my rapper student, david, noah my favorite! sooo chakhe, tim, jiwon

Cafe Bar in 청담

Cheongdam is an area in Gangnam near Apkujeong. It has trendy restaurants and bars. Somehow I blacked out after this picture was taken. No bueno.

They called this a creme brulee. It had no creme nor bruleeing of any creme product.

2AM

I . love. them.

However a few thoughts on this music video:
WTF is Jo Kwon wearing, that white number with the feathered shoulders
They are so angsty
Also, the title is kind of psycho "Even if I die, I won't let you go"

No matter how much you push me away
I'll hold onto you until the end
So that you won't be able to go anywhere

Needy much?

Who am I?!

I just went to a 2 AM, Beast, Kara, T-ara, Brown Eyed Girls concert. 2 Am is sooo good live. Beast was decent. Kara was OK. T-ara sucked, sucked, sucked. I missed the Brown Eyed Girls, so sad I missed the Abracadabra dance.

If only I was 12 and it was H.O.T, oh well better late than never.

Also, I felt super old. The girl sitting next to me was 11 years old. sigh.

I am such a Crier

I couldn't finish watching this because I started crying in my teacher's lounge. I had to take a break during the 3:50 mark. You might have seen this from NYmag.com. Quite possibly the sweetest couple ever. If I have a quarter of the tenderness of this couple from my marriage I will die happy.

I am such a sap, I have such a sore spot for old people. Old people in crazy love, forget about it.

Nothing to do with Korea, just wanted to share.

BoA "Hurricane Venus"

BoA annoys me when she sings live because she kept winking at the camera which seemed overly 'look at me im trying to be cute'. Not sure if she always does this or if it's for her comeback single. I got winked at by her 6 times, a bit much.

Then I watched her music video which is hot hot hot. So she now only half annoys me. The men in red costumes are cool.

So out of It

So I found out yesterday that Arcade Fire has their third album out and it is #1 on the charts (crazy). The fact that they're my top 5 bands and I had no clue shows how out of the loop I am. I am, however, obsessed with every song from Se7en's Digital Bounce.

I hope they make a single out of this song even though it is mid-tempo. Enjoy the pictures even though a few he looks scaryish (they're suppose to be fierce for his Blackberry ads).

Koreans love Tv

So Korea is the most digitally/techie advanced country in the world (suck it Japan!). So it makes sense that TV is available everywhere. No one reads on the subway because everyone's cell phones get TV reception. I am fine with watching TV on the subway. When my cab driver is watching TV while driving me during a monsoon rain, not so much. Although, I got to say watching actual TV sure beats the yellow cab screens with the lamest TV segments and commercials. I watched the typical Korean show highlighting the plight of some unfortunate brethren, a guy who had no use of his arms but had perfect use of his toes and even held a job with his limited mobility. Suffice to say I shed a tear during this cab ride.

The best fb status of all time

My student who I called Sanggy

I am going to live in Korea..still

So my contract is over on September 3rd. I was suppose to come back but it is not happening. Not until I experience fall and winter here anyway. I didn't think I would like living in Seoul as much as I do.

I have had friends say to me, "I get so bored in Korea after a month, how are you wanting to stay?" You get bored because you stay with relatives and need to see your extended family half of your stay. Living here is a whole different animal. There are a million bars and clubs to go to (OK fine, Korea's weakness is that there is not a whole lot to do for fun besides drinking but this sits fine with me), amazing restaurants, a thousand places to shop for boutique clothing, cool areas to hang out, a few cultural things. What more do I need? It is like NYC with healthier food, cheaper but well designed clothing, and a skyline that allows me to see the sun and the moon in the sky (gasp!).

The thought of getting a masters in education and moving here to be a professor has crossed my mind. I would be paid amazingly well in a city with a cheap cost of living (besides rent which is on a NYC level). Peter, in an effort to quickly kill this idea in my mind, said I would be leaving NY to be a big fish in a little pond. Offended, because Seoul is not a little pond. Seoul is the 8th most populous city in the world, more people than Tokyo, Beijing, NYC, London, Hong Kong, Berlin, Madrid, Paris. Offended because no one would say London is a little pond. Although if you take size, population density, and some other factors into account we go down the list. Let's just say size of a city is dependant solely on population for arguments sake. Go to the top of Seoul Tower and you would know Seoul is not a little pond at all.

New Yorkers have the tendency to think NY is the best. I admit I am guilty of this as well. We like to think that the world revolves around NY. John Updike has said, "The true New Yorker secretly believes that anyone living anywhere else must somehow, in a sense, be kidding." Speaking like a true New Yorker. While I still cannot say that Seoul is better than NY on a coolness level (because let's be real, there is no city as unique or diverse as NYC) there are, dare I say, other livable cities (shocker), Seoul being one of them.

So due to my surprising compatibility with Seoul, the thought of leaving American forever and becoming a lifer has been an appealing idea as of late. Peter's little pond argument didn't quite work. However, the next morning after this discussion with the boy, I woke up craving a bagel with cream cheese. A real bagel with cream cheese. A toasted sesame bagel with an inch and a half of cream cheese and maybe with a little lox sprinkled in. The day after that I really just wanted a slice of pizza, not a whole pie from Mr Pizza with sweet potato on it (although it is delicious). So while I guess you can take the girl out of NY, you can't take the NY out of the girl. I follow where my stomach takes me and ultimately it needs more variety, it's the spice of life.

Umbrella

The Hello Kitty umbrella I got at Family Mart really does not match my going out outfit. I didn't realize how important it is to have an extensive umbrella collection when you live in a place with a monsoon season.

Leeum Samsung Museum

The Leeum Samsung Museum is definitely worth going to. The museum began in order to showcase the Samsung CEO's private collection. There are 4 different museums within the museum. Museum 1 was traditional Korean art, ceramics, tree paintings etc. Another wing had Western art with the big names, Koons, Warhol, Bacon, Close, Hirst. My favorite part was the Korean contemporary art wing. I took some amazing photos but then got busted by a security guard and he made me stand in front of him and delete everything. Ugh. I will be back and will not get caught next time.

Help

How do I make pictures on this blog appear bigger? I am so bad with computers and my blog looks lame because the pictures are small.

Itaewon Coffeeshop

My friend introduced me to a hipster coffeeshop in Itaewon. I finally saw the nice part of Itaewon as opposed to the touristy part where all the trashy army people hang out. Itaewon has some really beautiful neighborhoods.

Typical scene in Korea. ciggies check, coffee check.

View on the subway going over the Han River

청계천 Cheonggyecheon

Cheonggyecheon is a stream in downtown Seoul. Taken from Wiki with my own comments and rewordings:

The stream was named Gaecheon (open stream) after the first refurbishment project to construct a drainage system during the Joseon Dynasty (mad long ago nuts!). The work, which included dredging and bolstering the banks of the stream and building the bridges, was carried out every 2~3 years during this period from the reign of Taejong, the third king of the Joseon Dynasty. The King Yeonjo especially undertook the refurbishment work as a national project.

Gacheon was renamed to Cheonggyecheon, its current name, during the Japanese colonial period. During this time, financial difficulties prevented the colonialists from covering up the stream despite several attempts to do so (the damn Japanese, why they gotta ruin everything for us? we can't even have a stream?).

After the Korean War (1950~1953), more people migrated into Seoul and settled down along the stream in shabby makeshift houses. The accompanying trash, sand, and waste, and deteriorating conditions resulted in an eyesore in the city. The stream was covered up with concrete step by step for 20 years since 1958 (good good way to get rid of an eyesore..cover it with concrete I guess). This area became an example of ‘successful industrialization and modernization’.

In July 2003, then-Seoul mayor, current President Lee Myung-Bak initiated a project to remove the elevated highway and restore the stream. Some people didn't want it, they spent $281 million us dollars making this glorious. Lee Myung-Bak gets the last laugh because now everyone loves it.

It is a very pretty refuge to relax in the craziness that is Seoul. The water is very clean, kids swim and bring inflatables. Couples cuddle under bridges (because I don't know if I mentioned that Koreans are super monogamous and everyone is one half of a couple here, it's annoying more on that another day). Really nice place to hang out.

They used to do army processions along this stream so there are tiles depicting this along the river walls.
